On the occasion on World Environment Day, June 5, 2022, Act for Goa in collaboration with ‘Make my Trip’ Foundation and Circular Waste Solutions India, hosted a series of clean up drives at five various locations in North Goa, namely:

1. Chapora Fort

2. Guirim Panchayat Area

3. Mandrem Beach

4. Miramar Beach

5. Bambolim Beach

The drives gained a turnout of 250 odd volunteers where all-in-all, around 260 bags of garbage were collected, where the volunteers who showed up ranged from active citizens and students, to professionals, panchayat members and organisation members & representatives. The hands at Mandrem beach alone, thanks to the support of KCIC collected a total of 156 garbage bags.

This initiative was further supported by local and national outfits such as TERI (The Energy Resources Institute), CCP (Corporation of the City of Panjim), NAMA Facility, GWMC (Goa Waste Management Coporation) and GIZ (The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit).

The emphasis of this venture was to honour this year’s theme ‘Only One Earth‘, which draws our attention towards playing our role effectively while living in perfect harmony with nature – without proving a burden on it, by removing waste from our land and spreading awareness on keeping our surroundings clean.

This initiative was successful thanks to all who joined us, as well as our organisers and supporting organisations for giving their time, resources and energy in such a hands on manner to help keep Goa clean and pristine! We hope to have more such events in the near future with bigger turnouts, bigger goals and thereby making bigger impacts.

World Environment day in Goa didn’t stop here, among us, there were multiple other clean-up drives held in the state where we saw many other organisations such as Video Volunteers, Royal Enfield, We Plant Foundation, South Goa collective and others clean up various beaches.

And we received some more numbers too:

• South Goa Collective – 100 bags of garbage collected
• Responsible Earth Foundation – 2500 kgs of garbage collected
• Video Volunteers – 25.75 kgs of waste collected
• 200 garbage bags were collected from beaches Betalbatim to Varca
• 8 bags in Agonda
• 10 bags in Galgibag
• 38 bags in Vagator
• 17 bags in Anjuna
• 40 bags in Calangute
• 118 bags in Baga

This means that almost 800 bags of waste (reported) were collected across Goa in addition to 2,526 kgs of waste. This is such an inspiring feat!

When hosting or participating in such clean ups, we not only create a cleaner and healthier planet, but it brings about self realisation and fulfillment, it creates a psychological impact on others too and brings about so much of indirect awareness.
So a big thank you to all of these initiatives and people who came together to take care of our one earth!
