In April 2019, the National Green Tribunal pulled up the Goa State Government for failing to meet its obligations towards appropriate solid waste, plastic waste and biomedical waste management. The NGT directed the State Government to identify at least 3 village panchayats and 3 municipalities as models for solid waste management within 2 weeks. Further, the bench gave the state government 6 weeks to evaluate the damage caused by environmental degradation and to recover the cost of said damage from polluting industries as per the “polluter pays” principle. Alongside this, the Chief Secretary of the State was also directed to furnish quarterly reports on progress in this matter to the NGT.
